How to Track Grip Strength Progress: Dead Hangs & Forearm Endurance
Ask most polers what stops them mid-combo and the honest answer is usually "my hands let go" — not a lack of core strength or shoulder stability, but grip fatigue arriving first and taking everything else down with it. Why grip needs its own tracking, separate from everything else
Grip strength doesn't scale with the rest of your body the way you'd expect. You can build real pulling strength, core control, and shoulder stability and still find your hands are the first thing to give out — because forearm and finger flexor endurance is a smaller, more specialized muscle group that adapts on its own timeline, slower than bigger muscles and separately from them.
This is also the benchmark most polers never actually measure. They'll notice "my hands feel stronger lately," which is real information, but it's not a number you can compare against last month. Two simple tests fix that: a passive dead hang, and an active forearm endurance check. Both take under two minutes and need nothing but a pole or a bar.
The two grip tests that actually matter
Dead Hang
Hang from the pole with straight arms and engaged (not shrugged-up) shoulders, and time how long you can hold on before your grip fully releases. This tests raw grip endurance under your own bodyweight, without any pulling or core demand added on top.
- Beginner10–15 seconds, hands and forearms shaking noticeably by the end
- Intermediate20–30 seconds, controlled the whole way through with active shoulders
- Advanced45+ seconds, or a shorter hold repeated for multiple clean sets with short rest
Forearm Endurance
Dead hangs test passive grip; this tests grip under active load, which is closer to what a climb, spin, or transition actually demands. Do a slow controlled pole climb (or repeated squeeze-and-release holds on the pole if a climb isn't available yet) and count how many clean reps you get before your grip noticeably degrades.
- Beginner1 controlled climb rep, or 5–6 squeeze holds before grip starts slipping
- Intermediate2–3 controlled climb reps back to back, or 10+ clean squeeze holds
- Advanced4+ controlled climb reps with minimal rest, grip still fully engaged on the last one
Common mistakes that make grip tracking useless

Testing with chalk or grip aids, inconsistently. Grip enhancers genuinely extend hang time, which is great for training or performing, but it means an aided test and an unaided test aren't comparable. Pick one approach and keep it identical every time you retest.

Testing after a class or conditioning session. Fatigued grip gives you a number that reflects today's tiredness, not your real capacity. Test at the start of a session, on fresh hands.

Retesting too often. Grip endurance moves slowly. Weekly retests mostly measure hand skin condition and daily fatigue, not real adaptation — three to four weeks between tests gives a truer picture.

Ignoring skin and calluses as a variable. Sweaty, dry, or freshly-callused hands change your grip test results independent of actual strength. Note hand condition alongside your number so you're not comparing strength gains to a skin-day fluke.
